Taste is what's left
Two designers on taste, a soon-to-be father on what to teach his son, and agents that said they didn't. Plus: the time AI saves and the time it eats.
And now the news.

Weibo Physicists Challenge the Official Speed in a Fatal AITO M9 Crash
A driver died when his AITO M9 struck a lamp pole and caught fire on a road in Shenmu, Shaanxi. The automaker's account — 139 km/h, a driver at the wheel, no battery fault — now has an unlikely rival: frame-by-frame reconstructions posted on Weibo that come out at a third of the speed.
How a Borrowed Couture Gown Upended China's Biggest Fashion Night
A red-carpet broadcast gap, a wrongly accused actress and a claim that a star's Zuhair Murad gown was bought rather than borrowed turned Bazaar's annual gala in Jiangyin into seven trending topics — and exposed the quiet economy behind Chinese celebrity couture.
China Puts Tunnel Boring Machines, Dredgers and Drones Under Export Controls
A Commerce Ministry notice issued October 19 extends China's export-control regime to tunnel boring machines, dredging vessels and high-end drones, effective November 18 — the same regime now squeezing Japan's supply of a rare earth used in cars, jets and chips.
DeepSeek Is Giving Away Its Whole Playbook, Revenue Math Included
In a single week the Chinese AI lab open-sourced a search engine, an inference framework and the tools that run its models on Huawei chips — and published how much money each GPU-hour earns it. The giveaway is also a bet on surviving Washington's next move.
China's Biggest Short-Drama App Is Switching Off the Coins That Built It
Hongguo, the free short-drama platform that out-drew China's four big streamers combined, will retire the coin rewards that kept viewers grinding for credits — a rare case of a platform deliberately switching off its own growth engine.
The Weak Drink Beverages, the Strong Drink Big Water: China's Two-Litre Trend
Young Chinese office workers are trading the milk-tea run for 1.5-to-2-litre bottles of plain water, armed with a slogan that turns hydration into a status system. Supermarkets have re-shelved their aisles around the habit — even as the bottled-water business overall shrinks.

What a Refrigerator Teaches About IoT Baseline Hygiene
The refrigeration incident joins a familiar pattern: a long-lived embedded device with a maintenance interface, deployed by an operational team, reachable from the internet, and patched on nobody's schedule. AI Is Anti-Punk
Sam Altman is not punk. He’s no revolutionary. Jensen Huang wears a black leather jacket, the uniform of Brando and the Ramones, but that doesn’t make him a rebel. The scientists and engineers we might have looked to as the new hackers are well on their way to becoming among the richest people in history....
php2shell

My employer asked for honest feedback
At some point before I started working here, there was an employee satisfaction survey that revealed that flexibility was one of the areas people felt needed to be improved in the department. They've now issued a follow-up survey to give people a chance to elaborate on their thoughts with open ended questions. I wrote this. Remote work. Each workday, I rise well before sunrise. In the summer, my dog wakes me before my alarm has a chance to sound, but somewhere around the equinox, that changes. I...
#oneaday Day 866: In the palm of your hand
I've had my Analogue Pocket a couple of days now, and I really like it. So what is the game I have played the most on it so far? It is, and this is genuinely not a joke, Solitaire FunPak by Beam Software for original black-and-white Game Boy. (Apparently a Game Gear version also exists,...
